The Two-Day a Week Schedule Will Conserve Water and Be More Convenient for Customers
WCID 17 Board of Directors recently voted to adopt the new City of Austin conservation outdoor watering schedule. The schedule will allow for two days per week of outdoor landscape watering in place of the long established once per five-days schedule used for many years by the District. The two days per week schedule will be more convenient and easy to remember for customers, allow for more watering days, and, it is hoped, will promote conservation because more people will follow it. Under the new schedule, NO CALENDAR IS NEEDED, all you need to do is set your irrigation system to your two designated watering days.
Single family homes, duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes:
- odd numbered addresses will water Wednesdays and Saturdays
- even numbered addresses will water Thursdays and Sundays.
Residential customers will be required to adhere to this schedule May 1 through September 30, and encouraged to adhere to it the rest of the year.
Commercial and multifamily customers and HOAs:
- All addresses water Tuesdays and Fridays.
Commercial, HOA, and Multifamily customers must adhere to the new schedule year round. The new watering schedule will take effect on May 1, and customers are urged to start now by setting their watering systems to the new scheduled days.
School campuses will have specially designed watering schedules which will allow for watering different fields on different days, and the new ordinance also allows for variances and exceptions for customers with special situations such as large properties, or new lawns. Customers who have installed special water conserving irrigation systems, for example, will be granted variances to allow the systems to operate as they were designed. Systems using reclaimed or recycled water will not be subject to the restrictions.
The time of day customers may water will remain unchanged. To reduce wasting water through evaporation during daytime heat, watering with an automatic irrigation system is permitted before 10am or after 7pm. Watering with a hand held hose or bucket may be done any time of day or any day of the week. Other water uses such as washing cars or boats is not restricted to watering days unless increased conservation measures become necessary.
